On the morning of November 1st, a day after Halloween, fitness brand VALX gathered a group of about 50 ‘macho volunteers’ to pick up trash around Shibuya Station in Tokyo.
The company is headquartered in Shibuya Ward, and its president said that the post-Halloween trash problem had been a major issue in recent years, and not enough was being done to fix the problem.
While there have been previous efforts to pick up Halloween trash in Shibuya, the company president felt that the message wasn’t strong enough, so he decided to get help from ‘machos’ to show their efforts in a more positive light on social media.
“By spreading the message, we hope that more people will become aware of the garbage problem,” he said.
The same group of machos also helped pick up trash after the Sumida River Fireworks Festival in July. Most of the volunteers are office workers, but some come from overseas to help protect the city.
Wholesome chad garbage collectors. Very respectable that they volunteered to help clean up.
Exemplary civic values.
nothing says alpha like a guy who cleans up his neighborhood.
If only china would do something like this then maybe we wouldn’t have that garbage island out in the Pacific Ocean
Still it doesn’t change the fact that people is the culprit of pouring garbage all over the place, and it should be prevented
It’s Japan’s fault for not having enough trash cans for people to use.
That’s pretty true. If you know a big crowd is going to gather, the logical thing to do is to provide a lot of places to bin stuff.
Knowing how tidy most Japanese are, it should take care of most of the rubbish.
Then again, maybe the scale of the crowd is so huge that even 0.1% littering is still a big challenge.
